There’s a lot of debate about when the Martini was invented, but the original version contained gin and not vodka (which came later). Most people will know the Vodka Martini from James Bond, who likes his, “Shaken, not stirred.”
Vodka Martini recipe:
This is my perfect version. Two olives, which have been preserved in brine (so quite salty), on a cocktail stick. Two or three ice cubes, 1 measure of dry Vermouth and 4 measures of vodka, preferably a premium quality vodka like Luksusowa.
Unlike James Bond, I like my Martini stirred and not shaken. I don’t want too much of the ice to melt into the drink and weaken it. The Martini is a perfect pre dinner cocktail. You can drink a couple and eat the olives to keep hunger at bay, whilst getting a good buzz on. After drinking one or two, dinner will bring you back down to earth!
