Maison Bertaux is a Soho institution (like the French House, Bar Italia, Lorelei and Lina Stores) and apparently dates back to 1871! I discovered this pâtisserie about 30 years ago and I’m pleased to see it still going strong, where other bohemian, Soho, hangouts have fallen to developers. Aside from the beautiful cakes and pastries, Maison Bertaux makes the best ham and cheese croissants I’ve ever had. Don’t be put off by the eccentric owners and occasional surly waitress – it’s all part of the charm. Places like this can’t be created or reproduced – you won’t find this originality or the fantastic cakes in Starbucks or the like.
Maison Bertaux is at 28 Greek Street, W1D 5DD. I noticed today, a distinct valentine theme to everything. When you get fed up of cake, you can move on to the handily placed Coach and Horses, next door, for some real ale.
J’aime ce lieu. Il est tellement romantique.
