Yesterday I was invited to an all day party, celebrating the Royal Wedding (chez Rick and Su), in Golders Green. The party started at 9.30 am, though I didn’t arrive until about 1pm – which is probably why I was able to keep going throughout the day.
I was greeted by a table full of food – smoked salmon, cheese, Su’s delicious, home made, chopped egg, plus fantastic bagels and cholla from Carmelli’s. The cholla and bagels were outstanding – even better than Beigel Bake on Brick Lane!
Rabina, notably, had brought an outstanding cherry tart with cherries from her own back garden – it really beat shop bought tarts hands down.
At some point in the afternoon, Rick produced a box of Indian, Alphonso Mangos (mangos are the national fruit of India). I thought I’d tasted good mangos in Australia, but the Alphonsos were unexpectedly sweet and delicate. I’ll definitely look out for Alphonsos in future.
After an afternoon of drinking we popped over to Childs Hill Park for an expresso with a scoop of rum and raisin on top. For some reason, at this point in time, Rosie announced that she wanted a bacon sandwich. This seemed quite funny, being that we were in Golders Green, but the idea took hold and I found myself volunteering to go to Sainsburys on Golders Green Road to buy bacon. I half expected not to find bacon on the shelves and they did only have one type – streaky!
It may seem sacrilegious, but the cholla went really well with fried bacon!
