June 4th, 2011 I met Catie at Blacks in Soho, for a wine tasting, organised by Aubert & Mascoli. It turned out to be a very pleasant afternoon – the Genièvrières, a Bourgogne Macon-Cruzillé was particularly good. On Wednesday, somewhere between the Fitzrovia Private Dining Club and the bus, Catie had mislaid a bag containing some very high red shoes and part of her photo tombola. As we were close, we walked to Fitzrovia to try and track the bag down.
In desperate need of coffee, after tasting 15 wines, we stopped at Salumeria Dino in Charlotte Place – a charming and original Italian deli which sells coffee, sandwiches and groceries. The coffee was fantastic, much better than the new coffee houses and I have it on good authority that the sandwiches are out of this world (something to return for). Incidentally, salumeria means cured meat shop. We found the Fitzrovia Private Dining Club closed at 4.30 and decided to find an Italian restaurant or wine bar where we could have a glass or two of rosé.
The Trattoria Mondello on Goodge Street seemed pleasant and we could sit outside. They only had one type of rosato (rosé), but it was inexpensive and turned out to be very good. After a glass of wine we were a little peckish and ordered garlic bread, but our order was mixed up and we got some bruschetta instead.
What a brilliant mistake that was! The bruschetta was excellent and it definitely made me want to go back and eat supper there on another day. Bruschetta, by the way, is an Italian side dish of toasted bread, rubbed with raw garlic and then topped with something savoury like chopped tomato, garlic, onion, peppers or cured meat. I also thought that the staff (possibly the owners) were quite charming. A trattoria would normally be an informal type of Italian restaurant or takeaway – I believe it really equates to a bistro in this country. At 6.45 we went back to the Fitzrovia Private Dining Club, but sadly there was no sign of the red shoes. Catie went home, happy at least, from the wine – I was hungry by now and returned chez moi, to cook osso buco.
