I arrived in Barcelona today – I’m here to help my friend Oli set up his Homage to Cataluña exhibition at the Eat Meat Gallery – there will be lots of eating, drinking and cooking!
We met Maria at the Vermut Bar for a glass or two of vermouth and once fortified we headed for a restaurant in Born. To our disappointment we’d timed things too late and it was just closing – how did that happen? Bars and restaurants never seem to close here… Luckily, just round the corner, was Nou Celler, a traditional Catalan restaurant, still open and serving (my picture is of the back entrance – they had dustbins outside the front door).
Along with the obligatory pan con tomate, we had some boquerones – anchovies marinated in vinegar with parley and garlic, served in olive oil to start.
As a the main course we had their excellent sepia con albóndigas – pork meatballs, cooked with pieces of cuttlefish. My picture doesn’t do justice to the dish, but it’s brown food in a warmly lit restaurant. Do take my work for it – this is delicious!
We washed the food down with vino rosado.
Nou Celler is at: C/ Princesa 16, 08003 Barcelona
This all looks wonderful. I’ve eaten all of these in Catalunya and here in the Languedoc, so your photos bring back many happy memories. Enjoy your stay in Barcelona!
Thanks!
Just an excellent dinner. Love the idea of albondingas with cuttlefish. I see you ran into the famous brown Catalan food problem:)
The meatballs were very good – it makes up for the brown colour.
Sounds like you are in for a wonderful time!
Oh yes 😉
I’m so jealous! I had such a wonderful time when I visited Barcelona and would love to return there someday. I hope it’s not all work and no play for you while you’re there. Enjoy yourself!
There’s a lot of work to be done but you have to eat 😉
two three …had to say it … eat well x

Wonderful meal MD! thanks for sharing 🙂
Thanks Giovanna 😉
Am playing catch up today and am really looking forward to these posts. Still smiling at Roger´s “Brown Food” comment, I think we´ve all talked about this before! Can´t believe the first place was closed….shock horror, but it looks like things turned out just fine in the end from the great food you ate.
The restaurant wasn’t so much closed as closing – unusually they would’ve let us in and it was only 10.45!
It’s good to have you back 😉
Ah thanks, it´s good to be back!
