We were on the way home from Nou Celler when Oli pointed out the empanadas in Mucci’s, a late night pizza place just of the Ramblas.
Empanadas are half moon shaped pastries filled with meat, fish, cheese, etc. and are said to have originated in Galicia and Portugal. This style of pie has been exported throughout the world and is especially popular in the ex Spanish colonies of South America.
Having been convinced that these Argentine Empanadas are good, I bought one to try it. The girl behind the counter told me that carn picant (spicy meat) is the most popular and it was fantastic – a hot chilli meat sauce in a crispy pastry that smelled like pancakes. Now I wish I’d bought half a dozen for breakfast!
Mucci’s is at: C/ del Bonsuccés 10, 08001, Barcelona
I believe they are open until about 3 am and sell pizza, empanadas, pastries and beer.
Looks delicious!
Very!
That’s one of Barcelona’s real pleasures: the availability of some exceptional food in the wee hours of the morning. As an insomniac, I’d be in some real trouble living there — but absolutely loving it! 🙂
I have to confess that I’ve walked past the place a few times without realising it sold amazing empanandas.
You’re having a good time in Barcelona – as I believe are Chelsea. I must make it clear that I don’t follow football, but there was a piece on the news last night about them. Love the pie:)
Thanks – I don’t follow football either, but Barcelona have a had a bad time – they were beaten by Madrid too!
two three… to Chelski… Madrid were beaten by Bayen Munich, not Barca … that’s what happens when you eat too many pies… ….London is thunderstorms and rain and we are all looking at your wonderful pix with envy…How does this empananda pastry compare with Mad Dog pastry ?
Madrid beat Barcelona 2- 1 on Saturday 😉
Wow those look the business after a few cerveza 🙂
Cheers
Marcus
I think you’d love them!
Um yes please! I’ll have the spicy meat one!
Me too – I could eat a couple of them right now!
¡Qué buena pinta!
🙂
Gracias 😉
Oh my, I would love these…..do hope you´ll be recreating them soon!
You never know…
There is a very good empanada place at night time by Elephant and Castle roundabout, though they are redeveloping the area – I do hope the cafe stays open.
