November 26th, 2015
Since November 1994, Vila Viniteca has organised an annual festival of young wine in Barrio del Born, Barcelona. This year they present the new 2014 vintage from more than 30 prestigious Spanish vineyards, accompanied by tapas and other dishes from neighbourhood restaurants.
After a marvelous long lunch at El Racó del Mariner, we walked back to El Born and the annual new wine festival. One pays €5 for a glass and after that all the tasting is free. I was delighted to bump into a few old friends (no, not the wines!) unexpectedly.
Feeling somewhat mellow, my camera stayed in it’s bag until I reached the steaming cauldron of beans provided by top Barcelona restaurant, Llamber.
Llamber’s offering (for €3) was a crab ball with beans in a hearty crab stock. Full though I should have been, this was bloody marvelous!
Suitably restored, we enjoyed a local rosado by Ca N’Estruc,
followed by Beaujolais Nouveau (an unusual wine in Spain) by Joseph Drouhin. I wondered what the Catalans made of the distinct Beaujolais banana flavour…
Opposite the French interloper was a very local dish – botifarra cooked over an open fire. This is a traditional Catalan sausage, possibly dating back to the Roman occupation – it reminds me slightly of Cumberland sausage, which makes me wonder if they might have a similar ancient origin.
A hearty Rioja was needed after the sausage – this Murmuron from Sierra Cantabria was just right with strawberry and raspberry flavours.
Jamon Serrano, sliced wafer thin is obligatory at any Iberian festival – aside from tasting La Tinaja’s delicious ham, I watched intently as it was expertly carved.
We were in Calle dels Agullers (street of needles) at this point and looking up at the street sign I saw a wonderful pig’s head, which I dearly wanted to take home.
I think it was relative to the shoulder of pork being sold in buns, below – apparently cooked Texas style in a wood burning oven.
I went back onto rosado wine at this point, with a Castillo Monjardin, from Navara. This one was a pale pink colour and tasted of wild berries.
I tried some fantastic extra virgin olive oil.
Olis Baragalló drizzled their oil onto thin slices of bread and gave it away free.
Similarly, the oganisers Vila Viniteca handed out pieces of Fuertaventura mature goats cheese to cleanse our palates.
We finished where we’d started, with wines by Parató – these were our favourites – Oli liked the white so much he tried to buy some, but they couldn’t sell it because it was in sample bottles only.
Feeling weary and in need of a sit down, we went to a bar with tables outside, at the end of Passeig del Born. Another bottle of rosado was consumed along with a plate of patatas bravas and pa amb tomàquet. By this time we were a little peckish (no really!) and thought a visit to Romesco was in order.
Another bottle of rosado, croquetas, astonishingly good deep fried baby artichokes, allioli, bacalao and a lamb’s head (above) later and I was finally ready for the sleep of the dead!
Vila Viniteca is at: Agullers 7. 08003 Barcelona
Romesco is at: Carrer de Sant Pau, 28, 08001, Barcelona
Mad: you have left me totally breathless and somewhat in tears of laughter: do wish I had your stamina. Now, unless mistaken we are talking of a ‘long lunch’ and then a very long wine tasting [which sounds marvellous!] and then a bibulous sitdown with a few tapas thrown in for good measure and then something, well, a little more substantial . . . envy you but would have piked out half-way down the page for certain 😀 !! But glad you are having a good time . . .
Thanks Eha, sometimes I can’t believe it myself, but having written it all down I’ll remember forever. It’s a good job we had a sit down before supper 😉
What a day you had! Such food good and drink And at a great price. I loved the Beaujolais link. I want that bath! It’s really good this year. I didn’t notice banana, at least not in the one I found here. That cheese too! Seriously awesome festival. I’m glad you documented it so I can imagine being there.
Thanks Amanda – that really was an epic day and perhaps something that only happens in Barcelona. Banana is often a characteristic of Beaujolais Nouveau and sometimes even bubblegum! I hope to bump into you at the wine festival one day in the future… 🙂
I didn’t know that! Cheers to that!
You and your friends certainly do know how to make the most of a day. A+ for your fortitude. 😀
Ha ha, indeed and you’d probably think I spent the next day in bed…
Knowing you…I don’t think so. 😀
😉
Honestly…the things you do for us, you deserve a medal 😉 Looks and sounds marvellous and I love that Pig’s Head too!
Thanks Tanya – I hope that one day we can meet up at one of those festivals in Spain, instead of London.
BTW, I’m just about to bottle this year’s dam sloe gin – it’s tasting good 😉
Ooh how exciting. Need to taste my quince gin and see how it’s doing!
I’m just about to stick labels on the bottles…
I imagine yours will be ready if it’s been in the bottle for a couple of months 😉
I’d like the crab and beans.
I’d like it again, it was bloody amazing! Have a look at the link to Llamber’s website, their food is fantastic 😉

I also was attracted to the steaming pot of beans.. and that pigs head! Jake has taken home my pigs heads (I can only say things like this on your pages) – he is going to make Head Cheese. This sounds quite nasty but i am assured it is very good – we will see! Have a good one! c
Ha ha – I wanted to ask about the heads, but didn’t want to start a polemic. Brawn, AKA head cheese, is absolutely delicious, I’ve been meaning to do a post on it for some time. It’s somewhat like a rough cut paté. The heads can also be cut down the middle and cooked slowly in stock – I think Fergus Henderson refers to them as sleeping alligators. All the skin becomes crackling and the cheeks are fantastic 🙂
John is also collecting the livers – he is making liverwurst. I still need to make the chicken liver pate! c
Excellent! Livewurst is delicious – I was thinking about making chicken liver paté on Christmas Eve…
Serious stuff, MD. Liked the sound of the beans in crab stock and the crab ball. Definitely to be tried. What a fantastic lunch, evening and dinner…just about perfect. Haven’t you got the Soho Food Festival soon or is my calendar a colander:)
Thanks Roger, it was a perfect day.
The Soho Food Feast is in June, but here’s a new Soho Christmas song, a lot of which is shot in the French – see if you can spot Fergus 😉
